Abstract: In the NLP Group at The University of Melbourne, we have been engaged in a broad range of research topics relating to the text analysis of social media, including: contrastive analysis of the text content of different social media sources, lexical normalisation, user geolocation, lexical semantic analysis of social media data, novel word sense detection in social media streams, trend analysis, discourse parsing of web user forums, improved information access over user forums. In this talk, I will give a broad overview of these various strands of research, tantalisingly going into detail for some of the tasks, and also discuss what I think are the key opportunities and challenges in this space.
