Abstract: I usually face two different reactions when I present myself as a researcher and a developper of automatic handwriting recognition systems. People are surprised either because they think that the problem of handwriting recognition was solved twenty years ago or because they think that no one uses handwriting anymore. In both cases, "why working on such a subject, with no future ?". In this talk, I will present different aspects of handwriting recognition, results obtained in international evaluations and state of the art models. I will show that handwriting recognition is far from being a solved problem, even though great progress have been made recently.
